Ruth, a former student has offered the following excellent Top Ten Tips for a successful gap year!
INSURANCE is an ESSENTIAL
1. Define YOUR idea of a successful year out. Don't be swayed by other people's opinions or misconceptions. After all this year is all about you and what you want to achieve.
2. Make a list of all the things you want to do and all the places you want to visit. I found ticking these off a list is incredibly satisfying and is a good record of your year. It's also something to look at on the days when you feel things aren't going quite to plan.
3. Plan carefully, read any of the gap year books in your library, search the Internet and talk to others who have already done gap years. The planning takes a while but is imperative if you don't want to miss anything out.
4. Be organised with your time and finances, there's no point rushing around lots of places and seeing none of them properly- it's quality not quantity that counts!
5. Work out your own realistic budget and try to stick to it, the last thing you want to do is be in debt even before you reach university.
6. Apply to local and national trusts and funds- there is quite a lot of money available! Don't miss out just because it requires a little time and effort. They normally only require a brief summary of your plans and a covering letter; these are easy to write if you truly believe in what you're doing.
7. Don't take a gap year assuming you'll "find yourself" or suddenly discover your vocation- you're likely to be disappointed! You will be exposed to lots of different experiences during your year, but they may not have the instant life-changing effect you might be expecting.
8. Try to get your family "on-side" and tell them about your plans- it's easier to work with them than against them. Showing them well thought out and detailed plans should reassure them. The occasional postcard and email home is always appreciated!
9. If you're planning on going to university after your year out, don't forget to enquire about accommodation and loans in time. (March to June)
10. Finally and possibly most importantly, try to stay safe at all times. Your health and valuables should be a primary concern. Disregard hygiene warnings and travel health tips at your peril!
