The Russell Group

Who?

The Russell Group is the name given to a number of Unis that joined to represent the 19 top research institutions in the UCAS system:

  • University of Birmingham
  • University of Bristol
  • University of Cambridge
  • Cardiff University
  • University of Edinburgh
  • University of Glasgow
  • Imperial College of Science, Technology & Medicine
  • King's College London
  • University of Leeds
  • University of Liverpool
  • London School of Economics & Political Science
  • University of Manchester
  • University of Newcastle upon Tyne
  • University of Nottingham
  • University of Oxford
  • University of Sheffield
  • University of Southampton
  • University College London
  • University of Warwick

And the 1994 group?

The 1994 Group purports to represent 16/ 17 smaller research-led unis, e.g. Bath, Birkbeck, Durham, East Anglia, Essex, Exeter, Goldsmiths, Lancaster, LSE, Reading, Royal Holloway, St Andrews, Surrey, Sussex, Warwick and York.

And the Coalition of Modern Universities?

Formed in 1997, this includes: Anglia Polytechnic University, Bolton Institute, Coventry University, Glasgow Caledonian University, Leeds Metropolitan University, London Metropolitan University, London South Bank University, Middlesex University, Napier University, Queen Margaret University College, Robert Gordon University, Sheffield Hallam University, Staffordshire University, Thames Valley University, University of Abertay Dundee, University of Central England, University of Central Lancashire, University of Derby, University of East London, University of Glamorgan, University of Gloucestershire, University of Greenwich, University of Lincoln, University of Luton, University of Paisley, University of Plymouth, University of Sunderland, University of Surrey (Roehampton), University of Teesside, University of Wales College, Newport, University of Wales Institute, Cardiff, University of Westminster University of Wolverhampton.

Are they the best Unis?

  • Every university in the UK has a leading course or more than 1.
  • Just as in the US, the Ivy League does not contain all the top uni, so for example the Russell Group does not account for the unis flying up the league tables like Loughborough and Aston. The coalitions and groups tend to be created for political clout/ discussion.
